6 Tips for Improving Your Surfing Technique

If you live in or are traveling to Maui, make sure surfing is on your list of things to do at least once! It doesn’t matter if you’re a total beginner or have had surf instruction in the past, there are some things you should do in order to improve your surfing technique.

Find the Right Size Board

All surfboards are not created equal. Different sizes and styles are available depending on your experience level and the types of waves you’re surfing on. For beginners, it’s best to use a large board so you have a big area of support to keep your balance on. And having a soft-top surfboard is more comfortable for those who are on their bottoms, stomachs, and knees often as they learn to ride the waves.

Find Your Waves

Unless you’re a pro you should find beaches or areas where the waves are smaller. Ask the local surfing experts which beaches they recommend for beginners. However, even if you do go out into waves that are too large for your skills, keep an eye out for the smaller ones and only surf those. Often early morning waves are tamer than the ones in the afternoon after the trade winds pick up.

Find Your Movements

Practice the most common surf movements while you’re still on land. Sit and kneel on your surfboard to find out which way is most comfortable for you and to get a feel for what you’ll be doing a lot of on the water. Practice your pop-up technique to get you standing on the board in one smooth flow. When you’re in the water these movements will be familiar to you and you’ll feel more comfortable.

Find Your Position

How you stand on your surfboard is key to steering it and riding your wave successfully. Bending your knees slightly will help your body absorb any shocks and enable you to stay stable on your board. Move your head towards where you want to move and slowly move your upper body then your hips to complete your maneuver through the waves.

Find Your Wipeout Method

Let’s face it, you will fall off your surfboard. Find out from your instructor how to properly navigate a fall before you head into the water for the first time. Learning how to fall correctly will help you avoid being hit by your surfboard, know when to hold your breath before you go under, how and when to surface once you’re underwater.
